BROOMFIELD: A
History in Brief
By IntraDenver staff writer
Once
upon a time there was broomcorn as far as the eye could see. But
then broomcorn became suburbia and the town of Broomfield was
born. When construction was completed on the Denver-Boulder
turnpike in 1952, Broomfield was often thought of as the
tollgate. But a group of Denver businessmen had much bigger plans
for the area, and in 1955 they purchased it as a site for a model
"bedroom" community. 1950s suburban
planning soon took over the fields of broomcorn and
Broomfields city limits now extend into Boulder, Jefferson,
and Weld counties.
