City of Glendale History
Glendale began in the 1800s as a rest stop and watering hole on the major stagecoach route along the Cherry Creek Trail. Today it is a prime location within the transportation corridor of Denver's foremost retail, entertainment and office center.
Early in its history, the Glendale area developed a strong reputation for its nightlife, thanks to the success of the many restaurants and taverns created to welcome travelers to the area. The locale, abundant water supply and independent spirit of the original settlers provided the proper ingredients for a successful urban development.
As the areas around Glendale grew, there was strong pressure that more land be included as part of the City Of Denver. However, the powerful sense of community identity felt by the people of Glendale continued growing as well.
As the pressure to annex the area increased, so did the desire of Glendale residents to remain independent and create their own community. In 1952, the City of Glendale was incorporated.
Glendale is unique in that it is an island which is completely surrounded by the City of Denver. Glendale's current estimated population of 4200 swells during the workday to over 35,000, and attracts even more people after work for shopping and its legendary nightlife. Just one mile to the west, the highly acclaimed Cherry Creek Mall, with over 120 upscale stores, shops and fine restaurants, provides an exciting addition to the area.
Today, Glendale is truly an "island of opportunity". The city has adopted an exciting growth-oriented Comprehensive Development Plan, which welcomes and encourages development for commercial, residential and business
for the city's future.
Glendale is centrally located and has convenient access to 1-25, making commuting very easy. The high volume traffic arteries of Colorado Boulevard, Leetsdale and Alameda place Glendale at a prime crossroad of travel to Aurora from Downtown Denver, as well as to other parts of the metro area. Major medical services of University Hospital and Rose Medical center are just two miles north at Colorado Boulevard and 9th
Avenue.
